One Pillar

orrs island, maine

Wisdom has built her house;
She has hewn her seven pillars.
She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine;
She has also set her table.
She has sent out her young women to call
From the highest places in the town,
“Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!”
To him who lacks sense she says,
“Come, eat of my bread
And drink of the wine I have mixed.
Leave your simple ways, and live,
And walk in the way of insight.”
Proverbs 9:1-6 ESV
This beautiful proverb and it’s ideas remind me of Jon’s outlook on this home. Do you remember Jon’s beautiful stairs? No matter what timeframe in history you inhabit— whether that’s the 10th century BC or the days of Amazon 2-day shipping, the truly good and lasting things require time and sacrifice to build. They take time to do them right and with joy.

Jon called us when he was ready to begin the next phase of his vision of preserving this quaint piece of Maine history and leaving an “Island Haven” for his family for generations to come. One aspect of that was transforming the previous owner’s art studio (the section of the house with the lower roofline) into a master suite that’s filled with natural light. The job was to prepare the shell to ensure a good workflow with the architect’s drawings for the floor plan. One intermediary step… that’s it; each pillar is beautiful in its own right.

changing the flow

Two doors were swapped for new black frame windows- to match the ones already installed on the main portion of the house. Removing the loft window was an especially interesting process, but so rewarding! A little dose of care and applied science rewarded us all with a heavy window removed successfully in one piece.

Putting it back together

We put new shiplap in on 2 of the 3 walls to match what was there. We love the painted wood with the natural flooring, that will get it’s refresh on the next “pillar” of this project. Even in our time working there, one of the things we enjoyed was how the uniformity of windows opens your eye to the moods of the ocean. Each day is different— beautifully stormy or delightfully calm.
